Crested gecko care!
For those of you who are new to crested geckos or just reptiles in general, I made this page to help you out!
General Care: Crested Geckos are one of the easiest species of geckos to take care of when you consider how complicated other species can be! They are so easy because they do not require any special heat lamp, as room temperature is perfect for them, as long as the temperature does not get over 84 degrees.
Feeding: This species of geckos does not require crickets and eats a powder mix called Crested Gecko Diet. The directions are to mix one part powder to two part water. If you feel like adding more protein to the diet, most geckos will accept crickets once a week as long as you dust the crickets in a D3 vitamin powder. You can pick up D3 vitamin powder at any pet store! Some websites will say you can feed baby food to the geckos but DO NOT FEED THEM THIS!!! It lacks the proper nutritional value that they need and can lead to Metabolic Bone Disease which can and will kill your gecko!
Habitat: This species absolutely NEEDS a terrarium that is higher rather than long, because they love to climb! An adult Crested will happily be kept in a 20 gallon tall terrarium which can be found at a pet store or online, which might be cheaper!
Bedding: Some people use an earth like substrate called Eco-Earth. However, this can prove to be bad if they eat to much when they jump for a cricket and miss. The best thing to use is paper towels. They are very safe and easy to clean.
Handling: This species will enjoy handling if you gradually handle your geckos on a daily basis. To tame your Crested. you should scoop your hand into the terrarium with your palm flat. The Crested will most likely jump onto your hand, in which you can bring them out of the terrarium. Make sure they don't jump off of your hand, because they will do it without thinking twice. Make sure that when you start the taming process, you sit on the floor so that if they do jump out of your hand, it won't be a life threatening leap. After they become used to you and handling, they will walk or jump from hand to hand and often sit on you as a perch.
